What is a Skills Assessment and Why Do You Need One?
A skills assessment is a formal evaluation of your qualifications and work experience against Australian standards for a specific occupation. It is a mandatory requirement for most skilled migration visa applications — including Subclass 189, 190, 491, and 186. The purpose is to confirm that your overseas qualifications and experience are equivalent to Australian standards.
A positive skills assessment is your gateway to submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect and being considered for a migration invitation.
Who Conducts Skills Assessments?
Different occupations have different assessing bodies. Your occupation code (ANZSCO code) determines which organisation assesses your skills.
Key Assessing Bodies in Australia
- Australian Computer Society (ACS) — IT professionals (software engineers, web developers, database administrators, network analysts, ICT project managers)
- Engineers Australia (EA) — Engineers (civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, etc.)
- CPA Australia / CA ANZ / IPA — Accountants
- VETASSESS — Over 350 professional, technical, and trade occupations (business analysts, marketing managers, HR professionals, and many more)
- Australian Institute of Management (AIM) — Management occupations
- TEQSA / AITSL — Teachers
- AHPRA — Health professionals (doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists)
- Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) — Tradespeople
The Skills Assessment Process
- Identify your ANZSCO occupation code — this determines your assessing body and what's required
- Gather your documents — qualifications, transcripts, employment evidence, English translation of non-English documents
- Create an account with the relevant assessing body's online portal
- Submit your application with supporting documents and pay the assessment fee
- Respond to any requests for further information (RFI) promptly
- Receive your assessment outcome — either positive, negative, or conditional
Documents Typically Required
- Certified copies of academic qualifications (degrees, diplomas, certificates)
- Official academic transcripts
- Employment reference letters (must include dates, duties, hours worked)
- Payslips or employment contracts
- Certified English translations of non-English documents
- Passport copy
- CV / Resume
- English language test results (some bodies require this)
Processing Times
Processing times vary significantly by assessing body and application volume:
- ACS: 4–8 weeks (priority assessment available)
- Engineers Australia: 12–20 weeks
- VETASSESS: 10–16 weeks
- CPA / CA ANZ: 8–12 weeks
Apply well in advance, especially if your visa application has deadlines.
What if Your Assessment is Negative?
A negative skills assessment is not the end of the road. Options include:
- Internal review / appeal — most assessing bodies have a formal review process
- Providing additional evidence — more detailed work references or project documentation
- Reskilling — completing additional Australian qualifications to meet the standard
- Changing occupation — assessing under a different ANZSCO code that better matches your experience
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Providing vague or generic employment reference letters
- Listing duties that don't match the ANZSCO occupation description
- Submitting uncertified document copies
- Applying to the wrong assessing body for your occupation
- Not providing sufficient evidence of the required work experience duration
