What it really costs to study in Australia in 2026
Australia is still one of the most popular places to study, but it helps to plan the money side properly. On top of tuition you need to budget for the visa fee, health insurance, living costs, and travel. Here is what each part costs in 2026, and what you need to show to meet the student visa financial rules.
1. Tuition fees
Tuition is usually the largest single cost, and it varies a lot by course level and institution.
- English language courses (ELICOS): AUD $300 to $450 per week
- Vocational (VET or TAFE) courses: AUD $8,000 to $22,000 per year
- Bachelor's degree: AUD $20,000 to $45,000 per year
- Master's degree: AUD $22,000 to $50,000 per year
- Medicine, dentistry and veterinary: AUD $45,000 to $90,000+ per year
Studying in Adelaide usually works out cheaper than Sydney or Melbourne, both for tuition and for day-to-day costs.
2. Student visa (Subclass 500) fee
From 1 July 2026 the Student Visa fee is AUD $2,500 for most applicants, and about AUD $2,050 for ELICOS and non-award courses. Family members on your application pay extra. Our 2026 visa fee changes guide has the full list.
3. Proof of financial capacity
To be granted a student visa you have to show you can genuinely pay for your stay. The current living-cost figure is AUD $29,710 per year for the main student, on top of your tuition and travel. There are extra amounts if you bring a partner or children.
The money also has to be genuine, traceable, and available. A big balance that landed in your account a few days before you lodge tends to raise questions. Every large deposit should trace back to a real source, such as salary, a property sale, a matured fixed deposit, an education loan, or a documented family gift.
4. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
OSHC is compulsory for the whole length of your student visa. Rough annual costs:
- Single: AUD $600 to $800 per year
- Couple: AUD $1,300 to $1,700 per year
- Family: AUD $2,000 to $2,800 per year

5. Living expenses
Here is what a student in Adelaide might spend each month.
| Expense | Estimated monthly cost (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Rent (shared accommodation) | $600 to $900 |
| Groceries | $200 to $400 |
| Transport | $60 to $100 |
| Utilities and internet | $80 to $150 |
| Phone, personal and leisure | $150 to $300 |
6. One-off and upfront costs
- Return airfare: AUD $1,000 to $2,500 depending on where you are coming from
- English test (IELTS or PTE): around AUD $395 to $415
- Settling-in costs: rental bond, household basics, and your first transport
A rough total for the first year
Add it up and a single student should plan for somewhere between AUD $40,000 and $65,000+ in the first year, mostly driven by course fees and how you live. You can work up to 48 hours a fortnight during term, and unlimited hours in the breaks, which helps with living costs. Even so, the visa rules expect you to show you can fund your studies without counting on that work.
