What is the Genuine Student (GS) requirement?
The Genuine Student (GS) requirement came in during 2024 and replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) test. Every Student Visa (Subclass 500) applicant has to meet it, and it has quickly become one of the most common reasons visas are refused. It is worth getting right.
How the GS differs from the old GTE
The old GTE asked for one open statement about your temporary intentions. The GS uses a set of targeted questions inside the application instead, and it drops the awkward temporary entrant idea. Australia now accepts that many students go on to apply for skilled migration. What it still checks is whether you are a real student, someone whose main reason for coming is to study a course that makes sense for you.
What the GS looks at
- Your current situation, including ties to home, family, and your finances
- Your choice of course and provider, and whether it fits your background and goals
- How the course helps your future, at home or in Australia
- Your immigration history and how you kept to earlier visa conditions
- Anything else that shows you plan to genuinely study
The most common reasons for refusal
- The course does not match your background, for example a big career change with no clear link
- Weak or inconsistent financial evidence, such as funds that cannot be traced
- Generic, copied answers that read like a template
- Dropping to a cheaper or lower course after a higher qualification with no clear reason, often called course hopping
- Contradictions between your answers, your documents, and your study history
How to write a strong GS response
- Be specific. Name the course, the provider, and the skills it gives you. Skip the generic lines.
- Connect the dots. Show how your past study or work leads to this course, and how this course leads to your goals.
- Explain your choice. Say why this country, this city, and this provider, over cheaper or closer options.
- Deal with red flags. A study gap, a career change, or an earlier refusal is better explained than left out.
- Back it with evidence. Your financial capacity, employment letters, and academic records should support what you say.
- Be honest. Anything that does not match your documents is the fastest way to a refusal.
Frequently asked questions
Is the GTE still used for student visas?
No. The Genuine Student requirement replaced the GTE. You now answer targeted questions rather than writing a single temporary entrant statement.
Can I apply for PR later if I say I am a genuine student?
Yes. The GS requirement does not stop you from applying for skilled migration later. It checks whether you are a genuine student now, not that you must leave Australia forever.
What happens if my student visa is refused on GS grounds?
A refusal can affect later applications and may limit your review options, so it is far better to get the GS answers right the first time with help.
